Unfortunately, the results from Tim's PET scan weren't what we had hoped for. His cancer has begun to grow again and has metastasized to lymph nodes. On Day 26 after his transplant, Paul is finally starting to feel a little better. It's not always steady improvement, but more of two steps forward one step backwards. However, at least there are a lot more moments when he's not feeling as sick as he was in December. Stanford said it will take a couple more weeks for Paul to get over . . .

After being at Stanford for the past three weeks, we finally made it back home to Berkeley. Today is Christmas Eve and also "Day 12" -- which is supposed to be the day that Paul would start feeling much better after his transplant 12 days ago. Unfortunately, things haven't gone according to plan. Paul got the flu just as his stem cells were engrafting. Because he was so immune-compromised, it was very difficult for him . . .

With Paul's transplant underway, we'll be holing up in our Stanford apartment at least for the next few weeks. Every day, we go off to the Stanford Cancer Center to have Paul's labs checked, replace his hydration bag and re-visit whatever meds he might need to combat nausea, pain or infections. Today was Paul's Transplant Day. They refer to it as Paul's "Second Birthday" because it's the start of a renewed life. The stem cells that were previously collected and frozen were then thawed and given back to him today.
